The Way of Utopia: Ritual Encounter (24 uur noord)

The Way of Utopia: Ritual Encounter

On 6th September, Zhongyuan-jie (中元節),

the yin-yang boundary grows thin.

From Keelung harbour (基隆海港), echoing through the waves,

the Yin Yue Yu (音樂魚) sing.

While P’eng-hu Kui-tshī (澎湖鬼市) breathes in silence,

she arrives with Śveta Mañjūṣaka (白曼珠沙華).

At 20:00, for 40 minutes,

perhaps at the 4th corner.

She does not seek ritual offerings,

but the emotions—

fear, surprise, rejection,

or tenderness.

Offerings may be spirit money,

but real cash bribes are acceptable.

What she truly takes

is your response.

If you see her, you’ll know,

a living ritual,

shaped anew,

with every encounter.

About the Performance

The Way of Utopia: The Rebirth of Nirvana, The Blooming of Hope is an intrusive and unpredictable performance by interdisciplinary artist Ko-Yu (Sara) Huang and collaborators. It is both a collective experience and a social experiment, challenging bias, stereotyping, pride, and prejudice.

Bringing together Asian and European cultural elements, the performance incorporates soundscape, soundwalk, theatre, installation, composition, and improvisation. Taiwanese death ritual, reincarnation, and mythology are woven into the fabric of Dutch daily life, resonating with the surroundings through both fear and tenderness.

Every encounter unfolds differently — shaped by how you choose to perceive and respond: whether as a giver, receiver, or witness. The Way of Utopia sheds light on rising from the ashes and finding hope in the darkest of times.
